These days the Spyware programmers have gotten so good they can develop software to infect a computer whilst a user browser a website. The website contains code such as JavaScript which exploits vulnerabilities in the web browser.
The malicious code may force the user to download and install the software and the user maybe totally unaware that anything has happened – particularly so if there are low security settings on the browser.
Some other drive-by downloads on websites exploit vulnerabilities in Adobe PDFs and Flash files which these days are commonly embedded into website content.
